Repair America’s Highest-Risk Bridges First

This proposal asks the U.S. Department of Transportation, working with bridge owners, to publish understandable repair priorities and quarterly progress updates for bridges in poor condition.

• A public priority list explaining condition findings and the other factors used to rank repair needs.
• A record for each listed bridge identifying its owner, planned work, funding status, and estimated milestones.
• Quarterly updates identifying completed work, delays, revised dates, and changes in priority.

2. Explain the ranking method and publish the date of the underlying condition information.
3. Update project progress quarterly and flag material changes separately.

A poor-condition classification alone does not mean a bridge is unsafe. Engineering inspections, restrictions, and closure decisions remain essential. The petition request uses the older phrase “structurally deficient”; the explanatory material uses the current condition terminology.
